Cognitive Decline in HIV

HIV is now a treatable medical condition. Modern antiretroviral therapy (ART) suppresses HIV viraemia resulting in partial recovery of immune system function. Although AIDS defining illnesses are now rare in persons with HIV receiving ART, the prevalence of other non-infectious medical conditions may be higher than that of the general population, with cognitive disorders one such condition. This presentation will outline the presentation of cognitive disorders in persons living with HIV in the modern ART era, potential underlying pathogenic mechanisms, current state of the art management and future research strategies.
